WAFT Annual Meeting No.2 20 October 2016
The annual WAFT Collaboration meeting was held at Somerville College in Oxford with 55 attendees. Scientific achievements and leading edge reseach issues were highlighted in the two-day meeting. Early-career researchers at the various laboratories that are part of the consortium provided research snapshots about additive nanomanufacturing, sensors and modelling. Research reviews focused on wearable and flexible technologies and 2D materials growth. Two industrial partners: Bodle Technologies Ltd and dstl provided insights into their capabilities, research interests and WAFT related collaborations.
WAFT Industrial Advisory Board Meeting 21 October 2016
As part of the annual meeting, an in-person Industrial Advisory Board Meeting was also held in the Margaret Thatcher Centre at Somerville. The IAB made recommendations for the rest of the WAFT program, but in general very positively assessed the initial two years of the collaboration, particularly commending the way in which the collaboration handled new evidence and areas of reserach by repositioning resources creatively.
The IAB re-elected Matthew Brookes from dstl to another yearly term as Chairperson of the IAB. Prof Bhaskaran looks forward to another fruitful year of collaborations.

The highlights of the first year:
=> Installation of spectroscopic ellipsometer for in situ metrology that allows very sensitive measurements of film thickness, optical constants, composition, surface and interface roughness.
=> Understanding the failure mechanisms in GST nanodisplays.
=> Using a different chalcogenide material to produce grey scale for the very first time with very high resolution: 50 nm, a 40% improvement over previous work.

WAFT Annual Meeting No.3 5 October 2017
39 academic and 14 industrial collaborators attended the WAFT Annual Meeting 2017 in Wolfson College, Oxford. Research presentations about flexible phase-change memory, in-situ film growth monitoring and thermoelectric energy harvesting kicked off the scientific update session. Introduction to organic photovoltaic energy-harvesting, then phase-change metadevice and gas sensor updates were provided. The presentations about patterned metallisation process and roll-to-roll manufacturing capabilities introduced the next focus areas for 2018 in the WAFT collaboration. Some emerging research directions were outlined in developing optical synapse, holographic display and metal organic framework percolation sensors.
WAFT Industrial Advisory Board Meeting 6 October 2017
New industrial partners joined the WAFT meetings: Plasma App Ltd, Sony and M-Solv Ltd.
The presentations of the industrial advisors from BASF, Asylum Research (Oxford Instruments) and Fraunhofer FEP initiated discussions about how to work closer with industrial partners and learn about their latest research and commercialisation activities. The postdoctoral researchers and PhD students gained knowledge about the histories and missions of the industrial partner organisations and their scientific equipments and facilities, materials, know-how and personal achievements relevant to the WAFT research areas.
